Mississippi School of Business leaders launched a campus chapter of the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. The first MC business students will be inducted in 2019.

Dean Marcelo Eduardo joined professors on Wednesday to announce the new international initiative on the Clinton campus.

Created in 1913 at the University of Wisconsin, the business honor society includes members in all 50 states and 190 countries. Alumni chapters stretch from New York to Chicago, and from Phoenix to Boston. It has more than 540 collegiate chapters.

Beta Gamma Sigma is a prestigious business honor society that will see its MC student numbers grow by this Spring, Eduardo said.

The honor society is fitting after Mississippi College’s School of Business was accredited by the Association to Advance Association of Collegiate Schools of Business International.

Officials with the Tampa-based association granted approval in May 2017. It is the world’s premier accreditation agency for business schools. Beta Gamma Sigma is affiliated with AACSB.

Founded in 1916, the AACSB provides professional development services to more than 1,600 member organizations and over 800 accredited business schools worldwide.

Outstanding MC undergraduate business students in the top 10 percent of their class will be eligible to join Beta Gamma Sigma next Spring.

Prior to the new honor society getting started, MC students were eligible to join the Delta Mu Delta business honor society founded more than a century ago. Students would need to be in the upper 20 percent of their class to join.

Business professors Stephen Trouard and Bobby Perkins joined Dean Eduardo at Self Hall to make the announcement on Wednesday.

Trouard was initiated into Beta Gamma Sigma as a business administration doctoral student at Jackson State University.
